New York City, 1990: When you slip through the cracks, no one is there to catch you. Monique learns that the hard way after her girlfriend Donna vanishes without a trace. To save the woman she loves, Monique must descend deeper than the known underground, into a subterranean world of enigmatic cultists and shadowy creatures. But what she finds looms beyond her wildest fears—a darkness that stretches from the dawn of time and across the stars.

When her girlfriend, Donna, went missing, Monique decided to search for her. But she isn’t the only woman who has vanished. Rumours fly about a monster in the New York City underground, and that no one is safe. Monique must journey into the darkness and face her fears if she is to be reunited with the woman she loves.

A golden lighter flickered alive in the pool of darkness and cast a glow over Corene’s face. Fiery reflections stirred in her hazel eyes. “Scared?” she asked. Monique glared. Wasn’t it obvious?

The Worm and His Kings is a novella that packs a punch! I had no idea what to expect going in and I was pleasantly surprised. The atmospheric description of Monique’s journey made me feel as if I was traveling along with her. I could feel the claustrophobic effects of the underground tunnels and the darkness of her path. It helps that I listened to the audiobook which gave it an even more gloomy vibe.

Monique is looking for her partner, Donna, but ends up meeting spooky creatures and a mysterious cult. But rather than just a plain creature feature, this book explores life for the forgotten and the neglected, and how survival means everything. It was not an easy read at times, and I really felt for Monique. The way this book portrays horror is compelling; weaving grandiose ideas with the trauma of everyday living. Monique’s story is a reflection of the way society treats trans folks in real life and it made for a harrowing read. The book isn’t just about a woman’s quest to save her loved one. It’s something more profound; challenging ideas about identity, acceptance, and the fight against oppression in a background of a colourful cosmic explosion.

I did find the story a little confusing at times and it was hard to fully visualise what happened at the end. I also felt that I couldn’t fully grasp everything the book wanted to say. But I had a great time anyway, and finished the book wishing there was more. I can’t wait to read the author’s other works!

I highly recommend The Worm and His Kings for fans of cosmic horror and dark quests.
